Council in Prince Edward County is going ahead with street light replacement in a test pilot program.
The program with Real Team Energy would see over 1500 lights replaced to LEDs, reducing electricity costs to the municipality by $1.7 million after 10 years.
The cost of the program is $75,000 a year over ten years with the annual energy savings approximately $142,105 in the first year alone.
Road Operations Supervisor Danny Blatenszky told council that while the majority of respondents to a survey were in favour of a warmer colour temperature light (3000 Kelvin), there would be a mixture of cooler (4000 Kelvin) setting lights as well.
He said the warmer temperature lights were favoured in the urban areas, while the cooler bulbs were favoured in the rural areas.
