Northumberland OPP are warning the public after a Brighton resident was scammed out of $15,000.
Police say they received a report on Thursday, July 2, from a woman who said she believed she had fallen for a scam.
The woman received several calls stating her son had been in an accident and killed a mother and her baby.
She then was led to believe her son called asking for money to be released from jail and then was transferred to another man claiming to be her son’s lawyer.
Police say scammers are counting on you wanting to quickly help your loved ones during an emergency situation and they are asking people to take the time to verify the story by contacting another family member, always be mindful of urgent pleas that play on your emotions and never send money to anyone you do not know and trust.
