World Rugby has officially cancelled the remaining rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series due to the global pandemic.
That means the end of the season for Napanee’s Britt Benn and Belleville’s Matt Mullins.
World Rugby has awarded New Zealand the men’s and women’s titles based on the existing standings. The women were in third place and the men in 8th place in their respective standings.
The COVID-19 pandemic halted play with five of the eight women’s rounds and six of the 10 men’s rounds completed.
Benn starred for the Canadian Women’s team that had already qualified for the now postponed 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
In an interview with the Kingston Whig Standard in April, Benn said she had planned to return to Ontario and become a firefighter in Guelph following the 2020 summer games. She had also planned to coach at her alma mater, Guelph University. She said committing to the 2021 Olympics will be difficult because she is ready to move on.

Mullins and the Canadian Men’s Team had also qualified for Tokyo. Mullins is a graduate of Centennial Secondary School and alumnus of the Belleville Bulldogs.
