More than a dozen charges have been laid against a trio from Durham Region after a traffic stop by Northumberland OPP early this past Saturday morning.
Officers stopped a silver Toyota SUV, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 west of Brighton, around 2:15 a.m. and say the vehicle was actually an Uber, which was carrying three passengers, including two men and a teenager.
Police say there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle and that a search of the car led to them finding crystal meth, Xanax, 137 grams of purple heroin, cash and weapons, including two knives and a fully loaded submachine handgun.
The two adult passengers also provided false information to investigators.
Twenty-year-old Jai’Lyn Mitchell-Charles of Ajax, 19-year-old Kahleed Hussein-Rayner and a 16-year-old from Bowmanville who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act are all charged with the following:
- Transport firearm, weapon prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a weapon
- Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
- Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
- Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited device or ammunition
- Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm/ammunition
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose
- Traffick in schedule I substance – Heroin
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
- Traffick in sche dule IV substance – other drugs
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon
- Traffick in schedule I substance – methamphetamines
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Carry concealed prohibited device or ammunition
Hussein-Rayner was also charged with:
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
- Obstruct peace officer
Mitchell-Charles was also charged with:
- Personation with intent to avoid arrest
- Obstruct peace officer
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
- Fail to comply with release order (5 counts)
All three accused were held in custody for a Show Cause hearing on Saturday June 13, 2020.
