The three new student trustees for the 2020-21 school year have been elected.
Moira Gaddes from Eastside Secondary School, Grace Whyte from Bayside Secondary School and Kayla Zachariah of Prince Edward Collegiate Institute will fill the roles.
Gaddes is also the Indigenous student trustee.
This year’s election took on a new format because of COVID-19.
The student senate was unable to hold meetings to elect the new trustees and instead it was decided the opportunity would be open to all students.
Nineteen students sent a written or video application to Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Director of Education Sean Monteith to express their interest in filling the position.
Vice-Chair of the Board Shannon Binder described all three incoming student trustees.
She said Gaddes is a Grade 11 student and has a passion for Indigenous culture. She is well spoken, comfortable addressing issues and sticking up for herself and her peers. She is considered to be a good voice for students across the board for bringing new and valuable perspectives.
Whyte was described as being passionate about mental health and inclusive school environments. The Grade 12 student has a background working with children, making connecting and representing the student voice an easy fit.
Zachariah is a Grade 11 student with a strong voice for student well-being and bringing the needs and concerns of students forward. She also has a diverse skill set that can complement the role of student trustee.
