A 25-year-old man from Keene, Ontario is facing multiple charges after a high-speed chase with OPP on Monday morning.
Police say around 6 a.m., officers were called to the eastbound 401 for a report of a vehicle travelling in an erratic manner at very high speeds.
It was determined the vehicle had been stolen from Peterborough earlier in the day.
The driver refused to stop and officers stopped their pursuit because of the risk to the public.
The vehicle was stopped on County Road 4 after a tire deflation device was used but the driver fled on foot before being arrested a short time later with the assistance of local residents – one of whom was an off-duty OPP officer.
Ryan Girard, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with:
- Three counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000;
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000;
- Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle;
- Flight from a police officer, all contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada; as well as
- Driving a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act; and
- Stunt driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused was held in custody and appeared in a bail hearing via video at the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee.
