The Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health Unit is reminding residents to be safe and practice physical distancing if participating in anti-racism rallies this weekend.
The Health Unit says for those who choose to participate in rallies, consider the following guidance to minimize risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you are ill or have recently travelled, stay home. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, get tested. Visit hpePublicHealth.ca or contact HPEPH at 613-966-5500.
If you are at risk due to an underlying medical condition or age, stay home and consider alternate ways to demonstrate support.
The following are strategies to reduce your risk of COVID-19 while participating in a protest. Note that restrictions continue for social gatherings of more than five people due to the provincial emergency orders.
- Maintain physical distance of two metres
- Use a non-medical face covering, as physical distancing may be difficult
- Bring hand sanitizer and wash or sanitize your hands often
- Do not touch your face
- Avoid socializing before or after
- Use signs and avoid shouting or yelling to limit droplet spread
- Avoid going indoors where the air cannot be ventilated, you are much safer outside
- Self-monitor for symptoms for two weeks afterwards and if you develop even one symptom, self-isolate and get tested
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) is committed to health equity. They are implementing their strategic priorities, including the core values of respect and advocacy, to address health equity. They say they will reflect on how the organization can improve their work for Black, Indigenous and People of Color in our communities and recognize the significant effects of racism on health.
