The Belleville Police Service is responding to a pair of controversial Facebook posts, involving one of its officers, which are making the rounds across social media.
The posts, which appear to have been put online a few weeks ago, show constable Todd Bennett wearing a t-shirt with a Confederate Flag on it and riding in a golf cart with the same flag on the back.
The BPS responded with a Tweet on Wednesday morning that says it is “aware of the post made by one of its officers on a personal Facebook page that was offensive” and that when “we became aware of the situation, we immediately took action.”
The Tweet goes on to say that the post has since been taken down and Constable Bennett has apologized “as he did not intent to offend anyone”.
The BPS says it “understands the high standards that the community places on its officers and will continue to strive to meet and exceed those expectations”.
The police force isn’t making any further comment or releasing any other information on the situation.
2/2 post, as he did not intend to offend anyone. The Belleville Police Service understands the high standards that the community places on our officers and we will continue to strive to meet and exceed those expectations.
