The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board says it will no longer be releasing outflows from the lake above what is prescribed in plan 2014.
The board had been releasing more water than the plan called for, in order to try and mitigate flooding impacts due to high water levels on Lake Ontario and said Friday that the lake has hit its peak early and begun its seasonal decline.
Lake Ontario peaked at 75.4 metres earlier this month, which is 10 centimetres below the general flood stage and over a half-metre lower than the peak last year.
Those lower Lake Ontario levels, combined with high outflows are causing increased currents and changes in levels in the upper St. Lawrence River, and the board says it will continue to monitor that situation moving forward.
