When the COVID Assessment Centre moved into the former Quinte Secondary School, the teams working there immediately felt the support of the community.
Belleville resident Heather Hall has a sister who works at the centre and says she had heard about some local restaurants donating food to the Belleville General Hospital but she hadn’t heard about any food donations going to the COVID Assessment Centre. Hall says “I knew in large part it was because not a lot of people knew about the Centre so I decided to do a lunch for the team there.”
Then she decided to do a weekly lunch but knew she couldn’t sustain it on her own so she reached out to a Facebook group “Belleville North Neighbours” and asked if anyone wanted to help.
Hall says she received messages from over a dozen people, some offering money while some offered baked goods, some companies have done lunches. Hall says “It has gotten bigger and bigger.” She says it varies from one lunch a week to sometimes three times a week and she includes the COVID Call Centre in her lunches as well.
Belleville General Hospital Foundation Executive Director Steve Cook says “We really love the sense of community that has become apparent during the COVID outbreak. It is incredible to see people just doing a good deed for the frontline teams at BGH.”
