A cannabis production facility, being proposed for Belleville’s east end, is one step closer to approval.
The request for rezoning came before Tuesday night’s virtual meeting of the Planning Advisory Committee.
The committee received a staff report that indicated the proposal for the facility in a section of a large warehouse building at 665 Dundas Street east should help diversify the economic base of the city.
The report says public concerns regarding odour should be mitigated by Health Canada’s requirement for an air filtration system.
Staff are satisfied that public concerns expressed at a March meeting of the committee in relation to odour, property values, fencing, lighting and security have been addressed by the company.
Committee member Councillor Pat Culhane pointed out some concerns raised by a resident about what specific technology would be used for odour mitigation.
Culhane put forward a motion to to seek more specifics on the odour control issue.
The motion was defeated.
It’s estimated 40 jobs could be created when cannabis production would be at full capacity.
The Planning Committee voted to recommend council approve the rezoning.
It’s expected to come before council at its next meeting, later this month.
