In conjunction with the “Canada Road Safety Week” campaign, the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will also be focusing its efforts on Off Road Vehicle (ORV) and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) enforcement beginning Friday through to Monday.
Members of Northumberland OPP will be increasing patrols throughout the county on roadways and trails to enforce the laws as well as supporting and educating riders on how to making good decisions while out on their ORV or ATV.
ORV/ATV Riders:
Make it a priority to:
- Always wear protective equipment which includes a well fitted approved helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the ankle boots, and gloves.
- Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Ride with others – never alone
- Take a safety course and get to know your equipment
- Stay in control and ride within your skill level
- Carry a first-aid pack and vehicle-repair kit with you.
- Carry your ATV/ORV’s registration permit or a true copy
- Know your responsibilities wherever y ou ride
- Always tell someone what your trip or activity plans are and when you expect to return.
- Never allow a child under 16 years old to operate an ATV with-out adult supervision.
- Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people
