It’s a well known fact that trees are not only beautiful but crucial to our very existence and governments of all sizes along with many citizens are recognizing more than ever that trees are important.
And Quinte West’s Planning Advisory Committee wants council to approve a phased plan to promote tree growth in the community.
Right now 37% of Quinte West’s area is under a tree canopy of one sort or another.
However in Trenton there is just 11% tree cover and in Frankford 30%.
A staff report approved by the Committee suggests steps be taken right away by the city to consult with developers about trying to keep some existing trees on property slated for construction instead of clearing all of the land which is often the practice now.
The plan would also have the city promote the importance of trees to residents and get involved in tree-giveaway programs and any other program helping boost the tree canopy.
The plan also includes long term goals that could see council pass by-laws regulating tree planting and growth and perhaps setting goals such as deciding that within five years both Trenton and Frankford should have trees taking up 50% of their respective areas.
