United Way Hastings & Prince Edward, in partnership with the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program is increasing the capacity of organizations providing services to seniors across the community.
“A $9 million fund was announced by the Federal government in early April” said Brandi Hodge, Executive Director of United Way Hastings & Prince Edward. “those funds were distributed across Canada based on the population of seniors in each area using StatCan data. Our United Way received $68,000.”
The funding is intended to support programs that focus on seniors (55+) impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to respond to immediate, urgent local needs by supporting basic needs such as food, cleaning, and hygiene products including delivery; reduced social isolation, and/or support for community service organizations to maintain or enhance services such as volunteer and staff retention.
United Way HPE has allocated the full $68,000, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Pro-gram, across the region ensuring that every corner of HPE has increased capacity to care for seniors in their community.
Funding was allocated to Community Care South Hastings, Care North Hastings, Community Care Central Has-tings, VON in Quinte West, Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Assoc. to provide services such as hot and frozen meals on wheels, reassurance checks and grocery delivery, as well as to Bancroft Community Transit and United Way HPE who are providing grocery delivery services to seniors in their area.
United Way HPE also launched the Coronavirus Covid-19 Community Response Fund in March and has raised over $50,000 to date.
