Hastings County Council, through its Warden Rick Phillips and CAO Jim Pine, has made it crystal clear how much it disapproves about recent social media comments made by local MP Derek Sloan about Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam.
The county has sent a letter to the leader of the Conservative Party Andrew Scheer asking that he censure Sloan, suggesting his removal from the party’s caucus might be appropriate.
Meanwhile, Lennox and Addington County Council is expected to make formal comment on the issue soon.
Warden Marg Isbester says she’ll be consulting with others on council before issuing a formal statement but offered this comment based her own feelings.
Isbester sayw Dr. Tam is a person of the highest calibre working to the best of her ability in a very difficult situation and most people she’s spoken to do not agree with Sloan’s comments.
Sloan, Member of Parliament for Hastings-Lennox and Addington riding, suggested Dr. Tam should be removed from her position and he accused her of repeating misinformation from China about COVID-19 causing a more serious problem for Canadians.
Those comments were slammed by many as racist and counter-productive.
