As we wait for restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus to be relaxed or lifted, local summer sports leagues hold out hope they will be able to play at some point this season.
That includes two of the oldest leagues, not only in Belleville, but in Ontario.
The South Hastings Baseball League has eight teams ready to go for their 87th consecutive year.
League president John Masterson says the SHBL has never had a season totally cancelled.
Masterson says one way or another they intend to keep that streak alive.
The South Hastings Baseball League play all of their games in Melrose and have to wait until Tyendinaga Township gives them the go-ahead. There was a league meeting planned for May 4 that has been cancelled.
The Belleville Ladies Business Softball League has been around for 52 years with number 53 on hold. Spokesperson Luanne Williams says they have to wait for direction from the City of Belleville as they play all of their games at Legion Park. Williams hopes to hear from the city’s Recreation Department soon.
