The Coronavirus, market conditions, and product demand are all reasons given by the company for the closure of the Sonoco Paper Mill in Glen Miller.
On Tuesday, Quinte News spoke with Julie Scott in Communications with Sonoco Head Office in South Carolina.
She says the demand for recycled pulp, which was being made in Glen Miller and exported to Asia, slowed due to COVID-19.
Scott adds there has been a slowdown in demand for what the Quinte West operation produced, and the company saw the cost production as inefficient.
Last year the company had been in talks to sell the site, however a buyer could not be found.
On Friday June 12, the plant will shutter permanently, putting 106 people out of work.
The plant makes recycled linerboard, uncoated recycled paperboard, and more recently recycled pulp.
The company has invested in their South Carolina site, which has been in operations since 1899.
