Loyalist College President and CEO Dr. Ann-Marie Vaughan says their recent decision to have students move out of the residences is a matter of safety.
Dr. Vaughan told Quinte News they made the request to have students move out by the weekend and only 19 did so. Since then another 40 or so have moved out with another 100 expected to move out today (Thursday) leaving approximately 500 students on campus.
She says if they were to end up in a quarantine situation it would be tough to handle.
She says it wouldn’t be fair to put staff at risk if they were put in that position either.
Vaughan says those students with extenuating circumstances and unable to move out are asked to contact the school by 8 p.m. today (Thursday). All other students are being asked to be moved out by 3 p.m. tomorrow (Friday).
She says she understands this is a very stressful situation.
The college has closed labs and shops until March 31 says Vaughan and they will reevaluate at the end of next week if they will remain closed for another two week period.
She reassured that no student has been identified as being COVID-19 positive.
