Free wifi for everyone in Belleville’s Downtown District could be coming soon.
This afternoon (Monday) at its regular meeting, Belleville council will be asked to approve funding to install free public wifi downtown stretching from Bridge Street to the area past McNabb Towers.
The system would also provide the city with data regarding visitors in the Downtown District.
If council approves the project, installation of wifi infrastructure would begin soon with the project to completed by June of next year.
The project cost is just over $100,000 to be split by the provincial government, the City of Belleville, the BDIA, and the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing Board.
Meanwhile, Belleville council will discuss affordable housing and parking at its meeting later this afternoon.
Staff is recommending that parking requirements for residential buildings offering affordable units be changed to allow developers or other property owners to provide fewer parking spaces for tenants.
Lowering the number of parking spaces required will lead to a lower cost of providing affordable housing making such developments more feasible.
Belleville council meets this afternoon at 4 o’clock at city hall.
