Councillors in Prince Edward County meet this afternoon (Thursday) and the environment will be one of the major topics covered.
Committee of the Whole meets at Shire Hall and there are two deputations to start the meeting to discuss the protection of the Millennium Trial Provincially Significant Wetlands and protecting the biodiversity of the South Shore’s marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
The deputation by Amy Bodman and Dave Mowbray regarding protecting significant wetlands asks for a speed reduction in designated significant wetlands.
Council will look at a motion later in the meeting seeking to reduce the speeds on Millennium Trail when passing through Hubbs Creek and Slab Creek from 50 km/h to 20 km/h.
Councillors will also be asked to address Wellington water servicing issues as the municipality looks at their Master Servicing Plan.
Staff are seeking to engage in negotiations with those proposing major development in Wellington to help address the infrastructure costs required over the next 20 year planning horizon.
The clear garbage bag pilot project will also be discussed by Councillor Mike Harper as he debriefs council on the new initiative.
Council will also be asked to reduce speeds on County Road 1, 500 metres east and west of Highway 62, to 70 km/h.
Councillors have expressed concern that that intersection is a high accident zone and are looking at ways to make their roadways safer.
Staff are also bringing forward a report regarding the rehabilitation of Black River Bridge.
The contract, if approved by council, would be awarded to GMP Contracting for $1.3 million.
Council meets at 1 p.m.
