Councillors in Prince Edward County are taking steps to reduce the speeds of east and westbound vehicles along a busy stretch of road in the municipality.
During the Committee of the Whole meeting at Shire Hall on Thursday afternoon, councillors voted in favour of reducing the speed along County Road 1, 500 metres east and west of Hwy. 62, to 70 km/h.
The recommendation came from the Traffic Advisory Committee to see the reduction in speed.
According to the report, in the last year, the MTO has installed illumination at the intersection as well as an overhead amber beacon, both of which help alert drivers to the upcoming intersection.
The County currently has a red beacon mounted on top of both stop signs, which helps alert drivers of the upcoming stop sign when it is dark out.
In addition to the measures already installed, the speed reduction will provide a further alert to drivers as they approach the intersection.
Councillor John Hirsch asked staff about installing no passing signs as well in both directions along County Road 1 as he felt it was a part of the motion approved by the Traffic Advisory Committee.
CAO Marcia Wallace couldn’t comment but stated staff would go back and look at the minutes of the meeting and would bring forward an amendment if his memory was correct.
The project is over budget but the work needs to be done on the Black River Bridge.
Councillors approved a motion to award a contract worth over $1.3 million to GMP Contracting for the rehabilitation of the bridge to extend the longevity of the bridge which provides a vital link on County Road 13 between South Marysburgh and North Marysburgh.
One lane at a time will be closed while the project is underway and temporary traffic signals will be installed allowing traffic to continue to flow through the area.
Project Manager Joe Angelo told council all the quotes the County received were over their budget and the low bidder, who was closest to their budgeted amount, was disqualified from consideration.
A start date for the project was not given.
The contract is up for final approval at the next council meeting.
