A plan that was launched in 2018 is hitting its stride, as Belleville Police officers are now taking part in some Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training.
It’s part of a BPS plan to do its part in aiding reconciliation with First Nations, but also in helping officers better interact with Indigenous people and handle Indigenous-specific issues.
Chief Ron Gignac says the training is extremely important for officers, especially given the police force’s proximity to Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
While some supervisors and senior officers have already received training at the provincial level, the rest of the BPS front line officers will be going through their courses through the end of February.
