Changes could be coming to how many parking spaces will be mandatory for affordable housing and second units in the City of Belleville.
At its meeting February 10, council will see a staff report, now in draft form, that recommends decreasing parking space demands to give affordable housing a chance to become a reality in the city.
Cities such as Ottawa and Peterborough have parking demands of less than one space per unit to encourage affordable housing.
For second units in homes they don’t mandate any extra parking.
The staff report recommends similar regulations for Belleville, which now demands more than one parking space for apartment buildings and an additional parking space for a second unit.
The current regulations mean that it would take more land to build affordable housing therefore making the projects more costly.
