Members of CFB Trenton are heading to the east coast following a massive snowstorm on Friday.
Up to 450 military personnel are expected to help with snow removal efforts in Newfoundland and Labrador, expected to take days, and that includes 15 CFB Trenton members.
A 436 Squadron Hercules 130-J left Trenton on Sunday and will be used to take soldiers from CFB Gagetown to some of the worst hit areas.
The Armed Forces members will remove snow, take residents to warming or emergency centres and ensure the elderly and those with health concerns are cared for.
Premier Dwight Ball asked the federal government for assistance and St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen initially declared a state of emergency on Friday, the first state of emergency declaration in nearly 36 years.
A state of emergency has been in place for four days.
