For the first time, Belleville is going to take a close look at the technology sector in the city.
The Business Retention and Expansion survey process is getting underway this month.
There are about 50 such businesses in the city.
Manager of Economic and Strategic Initiatives Karen Poste tells Quinte News Avaya company on Sidney Street would be one. “They would be a technology company because they’re doing software and that kind of thing. We have a number of automation businesses locally. They would be considered technology companies because they’re using all kinds of modern technology to automate porcesses and that kind of thing. Certain communication IT companies, even some of our customer contact centres would be considered technology companies because they’re using sort of advanced technology in their businesses.”
Poste says it’s the first time the city has surveyed this sector, which she says is growing in the area.
Poste continued, “We always ask questions about what would be support for the sector? What could we do to improve the business climate for the sector? We like to ask those kinds of questions to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support those businesses.”
The questions focus on how they find doing business in Belleville.
Poste says the city undertakes the survey for a number of reasons, including how many skills the companies might require and what support services are important to them.
She expects the results to be ready in March.
