It’s only been about 6 weeks since Belleville council officially began taking offers from people or companies interested in developing the former Ben Bleecker building site in the city’s west end.
But Mayor Mitch Panciuk says there’s been “serious interest” from a few individuals or companies and a good variety of proposals but would not provide detail as negotiations are just getting underway.
Panciuk had previously said he hoped the property would be developed by one owner and suggested it would be an ideal location for a grocery store.
The city paid the previous leaseholders of the property, the Belleville Agricultural Society, $600,000 to take over the Ben Bleecker site a few years ago and have since spent over $200,000 to demolish the old fairground buildings and move the lawn bowling club to make way for redevelopment.
