A study, undertaken in late 2019, by the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus is calling for three major changes to paramedic services.
The report notes 68% of ambulance calls were dispatched as “highest urgency” but fewer than 26% were found to be that urgent when paramedics arrived.
It found that time spent by paramedics across Eastern Ontario in hospital off-load delay is increasing annually, totalling 4.83 ambulance shifts per day across the region.
It points out that older adults represent 22.8% of the population but generate 55% of all paramedic responses.
The report was presented to the Hastings-Quinte Emergency Services committee on Wednesday.
