LoveSong makes good on deal with Prince Edward County
The saying goes “For every rule there is an exception” and that was seen on Thursday afternoon at Shire Hall.
LoveSong Seniors Housing Project Facilitator Ken How announced the municipality will be getting $325,000.
The funds are a reembursment to Prince Edward County for the purchase of the former Pinecrest School from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.
The municipality purchased the school 18 months ago and How says once the keys and deed are turned over, work will begin very quickly to retrofit the school to have 50 affordable housing units.
He said he still believes the doors will open to the facility in 2022.
How said there will be an invitation sent out for the group to present a cheque to council.
Chair Janice Maynard congratulated How and other group members in attendance and said this was a big deal for the community.
Sophiasburgh Cemetery columbarium
In an effort to be more environmentally conscious and with green burials growing in popularity, the Prince Edward County Cemetery Advisory Committee is hoping to install a columbarium.
Advisory Committee Chair Sandra Latchford asked council during their committee of the whole meeting on Thursday afternoon to install a columbarium at Sophiasburgh Cemetary.
She says this is a good financial decision for the County as it would provide a source of revenue and is a good financial decision.
Latchford also said Prince Edward County is behind the times as this is something people want, especially as space becomes limited in cemeteries.
She said there are a number of people who were born and raised in the County, who moved away, who are choosing to return to the County to be buried.
The average cost of purchasing a niche is $1,700 according to Latchford and they would plan to create a site that would include three or four units.
The upfront cost of one columbarium, including purchase and installation is over $28,000, but revenues are expected to be over $73,000 per columbarium.
The request will be considered later this month during budget discussions.
