The MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South sees this coming year as one that will see his Progressive Conservative government continue its focus on education.
“We absolutely must put courses and opportunities in place to train young people for the jobs of tomorrow. Technology has and will continue to make some jobs obsolete but the rapid changes also lead to great opportunities. Whether it’s online courses or in the classroom, we have to use technology to teach people and we need to teach people about technology so they’re ready to adapt quickly in the workplace.”
Piccini expects health care services to improve this year and into the future as his government’s newly created Ontario Health Teams get up and running. Those teams are made up of various kinds of health professionals and will provide mobile clinics to better serve rural areas.
“We want to be able to provide the right care at the right time at the right spot,” says Piccini.
Another focus that MPP Piccini believes will improve the lives of many, including a lot of people in Northumberland-Peterborough South, are the government’s continuing investments in public transportation.
“Improving public transportation to get people to the Greater Toronto Area will help the economy and help the environment”.
Meanwhile, Piccini expects that this year will see his government gaining in popularity. “I don’t hear much negativity at the doorstep and I keep going door to door in the riding whenever I can. People tell me we should stay the course when it comes to getting spending under control. We inherited a difficult financial situation from the Liberals and it’s no easy job to change that around on a dime. We had great job creation numbers at the end of last year and that suggests we are heading in the right direction. Yes, we had some problems when we first made funding changes but we’ve been able to modify approaches and that proves that we’re listening to people. We want to make life better in the province and we want to bring government into the 21st century.”
