It’s an issue much talked about these days and it’s top of mind for the Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte riding.
Liberal Neil Ellis is happy with his government’s focus on investing in more affordable housing in the past four years.
“Just in my riding we invested $5 million for more affordable housing along with $1.2 million to help deal with a growing homelessness problem.
But we need to keep investing in affordable housing and it remains a major priority for us.”
Linked to the housing issue is homelessness among Canada’s military veterans. Early this year Ellis introduced a Private Members bill to commit the government to ending homelessness among veterans by the year 2025.
“Estimates of the numbers of homeless veterans in Canada range between 3,000 and 5,000 and we need to do a lot better than that for people who’ve served our country, with some putting their lives in danger for our way of life.”
His Private Members bill received unanimous support in the House of Commons.
Meanwhile, Ellis says communities everywhere need support to build and upgrade crucial infrastructure like water/sewer services and roads.
“My riding received millions of dollars to help with infrastructure in the past few years and we’ll continue to invest because it’s crucial we stay up to date.”
