The province’s Special Investigations Unit has decided there are no grounds for charges against Belleville Police, after a teenage girl fractured her arm during a struggle with police in the spring.
The SIU investigation says BPS officers were called by Hastings-Quinte EMS personnel on the afternoon of April 11, 2019, after the 16-year-old girl had locked herself in a bathroom and taken a handful of anti-depressants, threatening to harm herself.
The SIU investigation found that after the girl refused to come out of the bathroom, officers broke down the door and grabbed her arm, and a “snap” was heard during the struggle.
She then complied with officers’ demands and was taken to hospital.
Interim SIU Director Joseph Martino says the officers’ use of force was not excessive, given the circumstances and no criminal charges will be laid against them.
