In an ongoing effort to go green, Prince Edward County is getting recycling bins for their village main streets.
Councillors at Shire Hall on Thursday afternoon approved a report brought forward by Outdoor Facilities Supervisor Tanya Delaney. The program would supplement the current curbside garbage system with recycling units in an effort to supplement waste diversion in the municipality.
The program would provide additional revenue to the County via the recycling, while local businesses would enter into a contract with Creative Outdoor Advertising to provide advertising on the curbside recycling receptacles.
Delaney said people will walk around looking for recycling bins and many business owners will take it upon themselves to make sure plastic bottles end up in recycling bins.
She stated in her report initial estimates based on similar programs in neighbouring municipalities indicate a possible gross revenue between $1,125 to $1,750 per year.
Delaney told councillors it is a huge challenge to keep garbage and recycling separate and will continue to be, but she is hoping with education, the cross contamination will be kept to a minimum.
Councillor Phil St-Jean said he was happy to see this program coming forward as it was a long time coming.
No official roll out date was given for the program.
