Belleville Lions Club has helped a dream come true for the Field of Dreams project in the city.
Lions Club President Larry Brown presented a cheque for $11,072.90 to Field of Dreams Chair Lisa Newman-Chesher, to cover the cost of the new state-of-the-art scoreboard.
The scoreboard has already been installed at the field.
Lions President Larry Brown says the idea is “to make everybody feel included.”
Newsman-Chesher commented she “couldn’t thank the Lions Club enough.”
She continued, “With all the contributors in the community, we are overwhelmed with the support we’ve had ….I can’t thank you enough for your support for this project.”
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk said, “Lisa Chesher and all the people involved in Challenger Baseball and the Field of Dreams are doing an amazing thing.”
Construction of the project is well underway and will include rubberized turf which helps people with disabilities play a form of baseball while aided by people who push wheelchairs, and catch and throw the ball, if needed.
It will be installed in the spring with a planned opening in June.
Panciuk says the city donated about $250,000 toward the project and commended staff for the work they have done.
