There was a heavy police presence around a restaurant on Dundas Street West in Belleville just after midnight (Tuesday).
An employee told city police that a man had brandished a handgun and a machete outside the eatery and then put them on top of a garbage container.
The man put both weapons back inside a backpack when noticed by the employee and rode away on a bicycle toward Mary Street.
Police swarmed the area but didn’t locate anyone.
The male suspect is described as white, bearded, heavier set, in his 30s, wearing a fall-type black jacket, a black toque, and a white shirt. The investigation is continuing, and police will be searching with assistance from video cameras attached to businesses in the area.
