The International Lake Ontario – St. Lawrence River Board is hoping that a continued deviation from Plan 2014 will bring water levels in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River under control, but it may be ultimately out of their hands.
Friday, the International Joint Commission (IJC) announced it was giving the Board the authority to continue deviating from Plan 2014 through June 2020 when Lake Ontario is forecast to reach its seasonal peak.
Board spokesman Rob Caldwell says while they want to do all they can to fix the situation, they need help from Mother Nature.
He says extreme wet conditions are the main factor in the record high inflows.
Municipalities along Lake Ontario have been calling on the the IJC to repeal Plan 2014 and immediatly drop water levels on the lake to control the flooding that’s devastated many properties.
