A local woman has been recognized by the YMCA for “her contributions towards building a peaceful community”.
Katherine Kerr-Pankow was awarded the YMCA Peace Medal on Tuesday night, during a ceremony at the Quinte West branch of the YMCA, after creating a local wheelchair basketball program a few years ago.
Kerr-Pankow works as an occupational therapist in seven schools in the Bay of Quinte Region and southeastern Ontario and began collecting wheelchairs for the program in 2013, before partnering with the YMCA of Central East Ontario in 2014.
The medal was developed in 1987 and has been awarded to more than 1,900 people across the country for their peacebuilding work with the YMCA.
