Quinte West OPP are reminding drivers about the increased risk of crashes involving deer this time of year.
The police force says deer tend to wander onto roads more frequently in the fall and that 30% of all deer vs car crashes in the city happen on Hamilton Road, with RCAF Road being the other problem area.
With that in mind, officers will be focusing patrols on both roadways over the weekend, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., watching out for deer as well as other traffic offences.
Drivers are also reminded that if you encounter any animal on the road, wild or domestic, you should try to slow down and never veer out of the way, because that could cause you to lose control of your car and put you in an even more dangerous situation.
It’s also important to make sure you drive within the speed limit and make sure your vehicle is in good working condition, in order to be able to brake and manoeuvre, if needed.
