They may have been strangers, acquaintances, or even friends, but they were all punching each other with intent Saturday night at the Belleville Armouries.
However, all the jabs, hooks, and uppercuts were for a very good cause.
More than 700 people cheered and booed as over 20 local people laced up the gloves in 12 boxing matches of three 90-second rounds each.
Thousands of dollars were raised for Grace Inn Homeless Shelter on Church Street in Belleville but the exact amount isn’t known yet as all revenue sources hadn’t been accounted for as of 11 p.m.
Grace Inn is expected to open in about five weeks.
The boxing end of the event was supervised by Boxing Ontario and the entire event was organized by Buxton Events and Belleville’s Bulldog Boxing Academy.
The men’s fight of the night went to Jody Hynes and John Enright while the women’s fight of the night was won by April Macdonald and Brittany Cassibo.
In a surprise award announcement, Peter Lyng was honored as the biggest loser on the night.
But in this case being the biggest loser meant he was a real winner as Lyng had lost 45 pounds training for his bout!
Another White Collar Boxing event is being planned for next year.
