Two men from the Havelock area have pleaded guilty to charges after a Ministry of Natural Resources Canine officer got stuck in an illegal trap in March.
The MNR says officers, acting on a tip, investigated an illegal trap where a bait pile of white-tailed deer that had been killed in car crashes, was surrounded by suspended cable snares.
The dog got stuck in the trap, but wasn’t injured and officers laid charges against Brandon Gatien of Havelock and Joshua Shannick of Hastings.
Gatien pleaded guilty to unlawfully trapping a fur-bearing mammal without a licence and to keeping white-tailed deer carcasses without notifying the MNR, and was fined a total of $2,000.
Shannick, who did have a trapping licence, pleaded guilty to using a non-relaxing cable restraint in a prohibited area and was fined $1,000.
His snares and the pelt of a fox he had caught were forfeited to the crown.
