A bus driver and the company he works for have both been charged, after a wheel came off a bus on Highway 401 earlier this week and debris from the wheel hit an SUV.
Lennox and Addington OPP say it happened around 8:00 a.m. on Monday, in the eastbound lanes, east of Highway 37.
Nobody in the SUV was injured and police say the 40 passengers on the bus were transported to Greater Napanee, where they waited for alternate travel arrangements.
The driver of the bus, 55-year-old Chunhe Hui of Flushing New York, has been charged with:
- Failing to maintain a daily log,
- Failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report and
- Driving while a part became detached
Meanwhile tour bus operator USS Bus LLC has been charged with various offences under the highway traffic act as well.
They include :
- Wheel separation – commercial motor vehicle,
- Operating a commercial motor vehicle with no commercial vehicle operator’s registration (CVOR)
- Permitting a driver to drive a commercial motor vehicle, not in accordance with the regulations,
- Failing to ensure daily inspection report was completed
The company has also been charged with operating a public vehicle, without a public vehicle act licence, contrary to the Public Vehicle Act.
