Two Prince Edward County men who “went way above the call of duty” were recognized for their actions earlier this summer in averting a potential tragedy.
Brad Osborne and Greg Yaworski received Civic Recognition Awards at the beginning of Prince Edward County’s regular council meeting on Tuesday night at Shire Hall.
The two men had just finished a delivery for Nash Home Hardware mid-afternoon on August 15 and noticed heavy smoke in the area of Gilead Road. They decided to investigate and saw a home on fire and what they did next changed their lives and the life of a Hallowell man.
Yaworski reportedly ran to the back and yelled for Osborne to call 911 because the entire rear deck was on fire.
He opened a door and a dog ran out and Yaworski was able to wake the man who was sleeping above the garage.
Yaworski then tried to the fight the fire while Osborne relayed the information to a 911 dispatcher.
The blaze cost $500,000 in damages but there were no injuries because of the quick thinking and actions by Yaworski and Osborne.
Mayor Steve Ferguson said the timing of the award presentation was quite ironic as it is fire prevention week.
He said they averted catastrophe and it could have been much worse.
Councillor Phil St. Jean nominated the two for the award after he met them following the blaze.
He said their actions exemplify what it means to be a County resident.
Osborne and Yaworski will have their names engraved on a plaque which hangs outside the CAO’s office in the lobby, which celebrates the extraordinary achievements and other contributions from people in the community.
