A Belleville city councillor wants to see high school students using Belleville Transit buses more, a lot more.
Councillor Sean Kelly, who served a term as a Trustee on the Algonquin Lakeshore District Catholic School board told council Monday that the board and other partners had been running a wildly successful bus pass program for secondary school students in the City of Kingston.
Interested students could receive a bus pass to ride Kingston buses free of charge. The program cost the partners $60,000 a year and many students started using transit buses regularly.
Kelly is asking that Belleville Transit look at working with school boards to see if a similar program would be feasible here.
“It helps kids become more independent and gets them involved with public transit early. It also relieves a lot of stress for parents and other caregivers who don’t have to drive around taking their kids all over the place.”
