Plans are underway to provide a special dental program for low-income seniors in the Quinte area.
The Hastings Prince Edward health unit plans to run the program for people 65 years and older with an income of $19,300 or less for single or $32,300 for a couple.
A report to the board of health this week indicates two-thirds of low income seniors do not have dental insurance.
Officials estimate 1,651 people could be eligible for the program.
Board member Councillor Sean Kelly said many people between 18 and 65 also need dental assistance.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Piotr Ogaza agreed.
The low income program is awaiting capital budget approval but could go ahead this fall.
