Brighton council will be directing any of its municipal sports organizations to no longer use Indigenous themed names or logos.
The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has suggested all communities in the province stop using Indigenous names and logos because of harmful stereotyping of First Nations people.
The only teams in Brighton with any connection to Indigenous symbols are in minor hockey and are known as the Brighton Braves.

Council and staff will work on a formal policy and perhaps a by-law on the issue in future.
Meanwhile, Brighton council is enthusiastically supporting a move to have more electric vehicle chargers installed in Northumberland County, and especially wants one located in urban Brighton.

Should the county’s application receive federal approval, Ontario Power Generation would pay for the equipment, installation and ongoing maintenance.
Partner municipalities would pay a fixed annual fee and be eligible to keep revenues collected at the charging stations.
Exact locations for the new facilities will be chosen after approval is given.
