Quinte West’s Corporate Finance Committee will decide on whether to recommend council continue asking residents to purchase dog tags for their pets, or stop the practise at its meeting Tuesday.
A staff report says about 2,000 dog tags, at a cost of $25 each, were purchased last year. It’s estimated there are around 8,000 dogs living in the city.
Revenue from the sale of dog tags has been less than $50,000 and doesn’t cover the cost of animal control in Quinte West.
Staff say many people use lost dog forums on social media to deal with lost pets and that dog tags aren’t that effective. Some residents have complained the tags represent an unfair tax.
Staff are not recommending keeping or ending the sale of tags, saying it’s up to the committee to debate.
