UPDATE: 401 back open near Port Hope

UPDATE @ 3 P.M.:

Clean up continues along the 401 west of Cobourg following a multi-vehicle collision Thursday night.

According to Today’s Northumberland, one lane remains shut down as crews clean up a diesel leak from the transport involved in the collision.

Three other vehicles were involved in the incident which occurred shortly after 9 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the 401.

Six people were taken to hospital, including one woman who was taken to a Toronto hospital with critical injuries.

The eastbound lanes were closed until the early hours this morning when they did re-open with restrictions.

On Thursday August 22, 2019 shortly after 9 p.m., members of the Northumberland Detachment of the OPP along with emergency personnel, responded to a collision on Highway 401 east at Hamilton Road east of Port Hope, involving a tractor trailer and three passenger vehicles.

Six people were transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment. One of those people, a 55-year-old female, was then transported by air ambulance to a Toronto area hospital with serious injuries.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 between Port Hope and Cobourg were closed for several hours while OPP members trained in collision reconstruction measured and documented the scene.

The Ministry Of Environment attended the scene to address the leakage of diesel fuel that occurred as a result of the collision.

The highway reopened Friday morning

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

There was a massive crash just west of Cobourg Thursday night which sent six people to hospital.

According to Today’s Northumberland, around 9:00 p.m., emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of 401, after a tractor trailer slammed into three vehicles.

Debris was strewn across both directions of traffic.

The big rig and another vehicle landed in the ditch.

The article says injuries were minor to severe.

Traffic was stopped on the highway, and several roads around the crash were slow-moving due to the heavy traffic.

The eastbound lanes are still closed.
