When it comes to endurance, 40-year-old Belleville native Jon Bell tops all others.
Bell has won the Ultra 520 “K” Canada triathlon held in South Okanagan British Columbia.
It’s a gruelling 3-day event that begins with a 10 kilometre swim followed by a 150 kilo cycling run. The second day included a 274 kilometre bike ride. The third day was an 84.4 kilometre run.
Bell’s total time was 23 hours, 41 minutes and 41 seconds. He finished just 13 seconds ahead of Barry Berg of Canada.
Bell said the race is something he’s wanted to do for the last year and a half and adds the satisfaction is incredible. Bell said the hardest portion of the triathlon was the run.
Sixteen men and eight women from nine countries took part including the U.S., Spain, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Brazil, Guatemala and Wales.
This is the 19th time the Ultra520K has been held. Competitors must first complete at least an iron distance race of 226.3 kilometres in under 14.5 hours.
The well known “Ironman” Triathlon is a one-day event that includes a 3.86 kilo swim followed by 180.25 kilos on a bike before finishing with a 42.2 kilometre marathon run.
