The Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario wants to set the record straight after comments from Belleville councillor Pat Culhane at a recent city council meeting.
At that meeting during a discussion on asking the province to fund more nurse practitioners for the area, Culhane said it was time nurse practitioners were allowed to operate independently and be able to regulate their own profession.
In response, the CEO of the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario, Dawn Tymianski, says that in fact nurse practitioners do operate independently and do not require supervision from a medical doctor.
And Tymianski adds that nurse practitioners are a self-regulating profession.
The Belleville Nurse Practitioner Clinic is one of 25 in Ontario providing primary health care to patients.
