Belleville city council has supported granting money for dozens of projects under the city’s downtown Facade Improvement Program but it rejected an application for
money under the program Monday night.
The owner of a vacant piece of land at 265 Front Street, Edie Haslauer, had applied for $20,000 to create an attractive green space or meditation space. A side wall on an adjacent building would also be beautified.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk stressed that it was a “facade” improvement program not a landscaping one. Councillor Kelly McCaw said approving the application would put council on a “slippery slope” as similar applications for green space and side wall improvements would become numerous.
Voting to support the application were councillors Thompson, Williams, Culhane, and Malette.
