The former executive director of the Prince Edward County Children’s Aid Society will go straight to a criminal trial without a preliminary inquiry first taking place.
William Sweet, 68 and from Picton, was charged in the spring of last year with 10 counts each of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
The charges were laid after a lengthy OPP investigation which began in 2016 into incidents that occurred between 2002 and 2010 involving children placed into various foster homes in the county.
A preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to a full-blown trial was to have started this coming week but instead the matter will go straight to trial.
A date for the start of the trial has not yet been set.
